What is an Amateur Radio Operator?
An amateur radio operator, or ham operator, is a licensed individual who uses radio transmitters and antennas to communicate with other amateur operators around the world for recreation, public service and self-training. They must pass an exam and are issued a unique call sign for identification. Hams experiment with electronics, build and buy their own equipment, and can provider essential communication during emergencies, like power outages.
Amateur radio describes the use of radio apparatus for the purpose of self-training, intercommunication or technical investigation by individuals who are interested in radio technique solely with a personal aim and without interest relating to money.
